Maubeuge. Just over the border into France...
The ceremony at the Menin Gate last night was something not to be missed.
I would estimate that over 1,000 people were there, on just a regular Thursday night in September, to pay their respects and remember. Various nationalities. Young, middling and old.
---------------------------------------------
We rolled out of Ypres early this morning, via the Menin Gate. The monument was chilly and empty of people, ready for tonight's gathering. And tomorrows.
It was a surprisingly long day in the saddle, (85 miles, according to her computer). We dodged thunderstorms for much of it. At one time we were almost caught by a particularly violent storm. With nowhere on the horizon to hide, I spotted one lone house under construction. We sped on, ahead of the storm and reached it just as the heavens opened up. Luckily the builders were happy for us to join them to shelter inside the part built house. We stayed there for around 20 mins whilst the thunder and lightening crashed around us. After the storm passed, we thanked them and peddled on.
Unfortunately JC's 'final check' of our vacated hotel room in Calais did not include plugged it items. Au revoir to my iPhone charger! (Now replaced).
My klaxon horn has been a great asset along the way. I honk it at all sorts of people: children, 'old dears', workmen, policemen... Always raises a smile.
We've ended up tonight at a town called Maubeuge, on the FrancoBelgium border. Not a great place.
That's it. Not much happened today.
I offer a prize to the person who predicts where we will end up tomorrow. Or nearest to...

Lily Stenay?
Wolfie Yeah. I'm with Lily. Stenay, wherever that is. (I saw the Pointless debacle.)
Steve I object to that Wolfie. Most of my (impressive/amusing) comments were cut. Whereas Lily's were aired
Mr J Peddled?
Soprano Hi Lunchi and Piglett - All well here in Northend. The awful rain did not materialise apart from overnight and a really nice late summer day with lots of sunshine. Pointless jackpot of £5000 still not gone on the new series. Shame that Andy Murray crashed out on 3 straight sets to Wawrinka the Swiss Ace in the US Open (by the way Wawrinka played really well no matter what Murray says about burnout since Wimbledon!) Big punch up when Bristol Rovers beat Bristol City and big pitch invasion - Police on the case! England 3-0 against Moldovia at half time (9pm). Woy Hodgeson been bit despewat at level of injuwies. He asked about Wane but was informed that better weather was on the way!! Ho ho. Woy has been hit by another WAG storm and they were last time branded as hooligans with VISA cards but the FA are on the case allegedly. A good read whilst away might be Zlatan Ibrahimovic's autobiography of his admiration for Jose Mourinho who he would die for over Pep Guardiola who he thinks is a spineless coward(allegedly!!) On a local level Larkhall FC beat Tiverton Town (league above them) on Saturday to reach the FA qualifying round (amazing). Great Hash Wed out at Neston with Spider setting another stunner. Got back to the car to find I'd left my dish at home so headed that way dying for a pint! Another hey ho. On On Soprano xx
Soprano Meant DOSH - not Puki !
stevejackiegreen Lily. I've just looked on the map. Stenay is a good two days away. It's over 100 miles of hilly countryside. Soprano - I think you've sent me a news bulletin by mistake. Have you sent my blog comments to the BBC?
Soprano Not sure last comment got thru? ..... But this is all interesting stuff to us back in the UK Lunchi. Didn't think you'd know all those incredible facts just cycling, eating and bevying up every night? On On Soprano x
Wolfie Typical of the BBC to cut all the good stuff. It's almost as if they don't want programmes to be popular.
stevejackiegreen Soprano - I loved it!
