Sur le Pont d’Avignon
L'on y danse, l'on y danse
Sur le Pont d’Avignon
L'on y danse tous en rond
Yes. We've reached Avignon!
Only a short stage today. 58 miles. But a better pace: 14.3 mph average.
Warm and sunny.
For the last few days we have, on and off, been following the ViaRhôna cycle route.
The flat countryside and the endless fields of maize and Charolais have given way to the steep sided valley with endless vineyards. (There's also a surprising amount if cherry orchards.) the area has a much more Mediterranean feel.
The Vendage (grape pick) hasn't started yet. I think they need a few more weeks of sun to fully ripen the grapes - it's been a bit chilly here of late and, I suspect, this wont to a great vintage for Burgundy wines.
This cycle route is still under construction in part. When finished it will allow you to cycle from Lake Geneva all the way to the Mediterranean. Mostly following the banks of river Rhone. It can be slow going though because it follows every meander of the river and has to go out and around every tributary (to get to a bridge). It takes you through some of the most picturesque parts of the valley including many nature reserves. The Alps providing a stunning backdrop. (Regrettably) we have to leave the ViaRhôna for an hour or so now and again to get some serious miles in on the road.
Yesterday a, fully lycra'd, French cyclist, of about my age, cycled with us for about half an hour. By the time he peeled off, to head home, I think I'd used up all the French words I know, and in every combination!
The iffy weather has finally perked up. It's now warm and sunny and we can ride in full Lycra (without an inner layer of thermals). Summer has returned. The roadside figs are ripe and sweet!
Will eat al fresco tonight...

Gazza You'll have to take us thru a map of your route when you get back. Sound like some really interesting routes you've discovered. You can leave out the hilly bits though! You back on your approx timetable? Gazza xx
Mr Jangut I didn't realise you were an Arsenal fan! Beware football fans in Marseille tonight.
Caniveau The weather map is showing the right sort of conditions to develop a Mistral wind that should blow down the Rhone valley at 50 km/hr plus. But with your luck, you'll probably be feeling the brunt of a headwind as you head south! Let us know when they do start havesting le cepage, I've got enough grapes on the vine in the back garden to make a few bottles of Chateau Le Caniveau
stevejackiegreen Caniveau. Indeed the Mistral will be too late for us. But the headwinds were 'character building'. Actually, we did have a tail wind from Montelimar. That was nice.
stevejackiegreen Gazza. We were two days behind (turn back day and Besancon). But we were 'on the rivets' for three long days and are now a day UP!)
stevejackiegreen Mr J. I'm not! That's why we aim to get to Marseille the day AFTER!
