We decided to do an overnight stop at Edith Falls on our way to Lake Argyle. We had heard that these are one of the best waterfalls in the country, and they were spectacular. Again they would be awesome in the wet season. They are about 70 klms from Katherine in the NT.
We did a quick stop in Katherine on our way to Lake Argyle to restock our food supplies and fill up with fuel. We pushed on to Lake Argyle arriving a day early as the time difference is 1.5hours back when you cross the border into WA. There is also a very strict border check on fruit and vegetables entering WA which we already knew about and had prepared for. Every car, caravan etc is searched and fridges are checked.
It's still very hot with the days hitting mid 30's but at least the humidity is now gone. After about 300klms from Katherine we spot our first boab tree. Then progressively more and more, and now they are everywhere.
We arrive at Lake Argyle, this can only be described as spectacular. The size of this man made lake is amazing. 17 times the size of Sydney Harbour. If they blew the dam wall it would take 4 years to empty. The volume of water that evaporates has been calculated at 200,000 litres per second. The lake is classified as an inland sea due to its size, it is just amazing.
We went to the Durack Homestead, these guys were the first to settle the Kimberley region, they drove cattle from Qld to Argyle station in 1883. The trip was supposed to take 4 months, but took 2 years and they lost half the cattle along the way. They perservered for the next 70 years and it was Kimberley Durack who pushed for the Lake Argyle project. Regrettably he died in 1968, and the project commenced the very next year in 1969.
We did the sunset cruise and saw several crocodiles and even kangaroos and were treated to a magnificent sunset (check out the pics). The boat stopped and everyone was offered wine, champagne and beer and could enter the water to watch the sunset.. Jo-anne, Lynette and Warren watched the sunset bopping around in the water on a noodle with a wine or two until the sun went down. This cruise was amazing and the sunset was just spectacular. Lake Argyle was probably number 2 for me after Kakadu and is an absolute must for any traveller to this region.
