We farewelled Darwin and headed south to Batchelor which is the gateway to Litchfield National Park.
There are many spectacular falls here and all are flowing all year round. We saw them in the dry season and they were pretty amazing, I can only imagine that they must be spectacular during the wet season.
After entering the Litchfield National Park the first thing you notice are the huge termite mounds, they are enormous.
We visited all the major falls including
- Florence Falls
- Wangii Falls
- Buleys Waterhole
- Tolmer Falls
- Curtain Falls (Cascades)
Most had fairly easy treks to get to the falls, except for Curtain Falls which required a bit of clambering over rocks to get to, and Florence Falls you had to go down 135 steps and as they say "what goes down must come up" but well worth it. On the way into Curtain Falls we spotted a small (3 ft) goanna happily basking in the sun.
The guys went swimming at Buleys Waterhole and Wangii Falls, except I decided not to. I'm still not comfortable in croc country, although I am now an expert on differentiating the difference between a salt water croc and a fresh water croc. It's very simple, if you are in the water and the croc is swimming towards you, its a salty, if it's swimmng away from you, its a freshy, but I'm not going to test that theory.

Les Elverd Hi Steve & Jo, Seems you are having a blast with Darwin & Litchfield National Park sounding great. Hope the cars are now all fixed. Darwin was rebuilt after the cyclone about 40 years ago so they had a chance to plan it better. Not sure you are in any danger from the crocs Steve, they do have standards and I am not sure you meet them !! Give Warren, Lynette & Jo-anne our love, stay safe and keep having a great time. Love the photo's. xx Carmel & Les
Mary-ann Pepers Steve I'm all with you - I wouldn't even think about jumping in if I knew a croc was within 50 miles!
