Broome is a strange town as it is in two halves. You have Broome and then you have Cable Beach and then you have the airport which seperates the two halves. The airport effectively runs right through the middle.
First off was the sunset on Cable Beach. It was spectacular. We were able to drive right onto the beach, park and watch the camels wander past and the sun setting across the Indian Ocean.
The next night was stairway to the moon. This is a natural event where the moon rises at low tide after the sun has set. It occurs about 15 times of the year and looks like a staircase across the water reaching to the rising moon. It was quite interesting, as is a fairly big event in Broome, although it does occur in lots of other places.
We then prepared to head off for a couple of nights camping at Cape Leveque, which I will cover in a seperate blog.
After we returned from Cape Leveque, we spent a day fishing with Warren's cousin Allan. He took us to his favourite spot, about 20 klms offshore. While the fishing was pretty good, the most spectacular thing were the whales. We saw plenty, and even got within 50 metres of 2 or 3 whales tail slapping and porpoising. We also saw 2 sea snakes swimming on the surface. With our good catch we had enough for dinner at Alans.
After we left Broome heading for Port Hedland we did an overnight stop at Barn Hill Station. This was amazing, our caravan was parked on a headland overlooking the Indian Ocean. This station is 430,000 acres and has 85klms of Indian Ocean beach frontage. It was so good that we decided to stay an extra night. Unfortunately we didn't go swimming as there is a resident 3.5 metre saltwater croc that patrols the coast looking for backpackers to have for lunch.
One thing that I have realised about Broome is its remoteness. It is 600 klms to Port Hedland in one direction, and 1000 klms to Kununurra the other and virtually nothing in between.
UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE NO PHOTOS TO SHOW FOR BARN HILL STATION, AS THE TABLET WENT FOR A SWIM AND DIED. WILL SOURCE PHOTOS FROM LYNETTE AND WARREN TO DOWNLOAD SOMETIME.
On to Port Hedland
