Soongies' Great Adventure
We explored Ngorongoro Crater today. Because the entry into the crater is via a very steep and narrow track, we left the truck behind for some Landcruisers to take us into the crater.
From the top of the crater, the view is pretty breathtaking. Ngorongoro Crater is basically the caldera of a volcano - fortunately, an inactive volcano! It's a paradise in the crater, even the animals seem relaxed!
On our journey around the crater we came across the usual suspects but we also saw a male and a female lion. They were just laying on the ground - we watched them for a bit and were about to head off when our guide told us we should stay watching them for a bit longer as they often have sex every 5-10 mins, depending on the day. Sure enough - a few minutes later - they started trying to reproduce!
We were desperately trying to find a rhino as that was the last of the big 5 that we hadn't seen in Tanzania (although we had seen a couple in Namibia). They are very rare to see - there are only 25 in the park. After looking for a good few hours, with no luck, it was time to exit the crater. Everyone was pretty happy with the wildlife that they saw but there was a tinge of disappointment that no rhinos were seen. We got to the lookout which has an incredible view of the crater. One of the guides pointed to some black dots down below saying that he thought they were rhinos. We all got out our binoculars, not sure if it was really a rhino or possibly a buffalo. Sure enough, after looking through binoculars and zooming in very closely on the pro cameras, we all realised they were indeed rhinos! And then more were spotted too! Everyone was sooo excited!
The 4x4s then drove us out of the park and back to the Intrepid truck where we then travelled to Arusha, stopping at a couple of markets on the way. That night we stayed at a Meserani Snake Park (they are all in cages) owned by some Mzungus. It was very busy there with 3 tour groups staying. Most of our group decided to upgrade to a room for an extra $30 but we stuck to the camping option. We made the most of a warm shower that evening and then hung out at the bar with lots of other travellers. Then off to bed as we had to get up at 5:00am the next morning to head to Nairobi.
