Soongies' Great Adventure
A beautiful sunrise this morning on our last day in the Serengeti. Mandazi for breakfast!
Today we were driving out of the park to head towards Ngorongoro Crater. We thought we had seen all there was to see in the Serengeti, except for the almost extinct rhinoceros. But then we came across something so rare that even Flo hadn't seen in her 4 years of coming to the Serengeti! We came across a pack of African Hunting Dogs devouring a wildebeest. Flo said she had never seen African Hunting Dogs before because they are endangered due to almost being hunted out.
We also saw heaps of lions lounging around. Even a male lion made a sleepy appearance today!
We also saw two hyenas mating – Carlo was narrating while he was filming on camera and came up with a clever hashtag #serengettingiton!
We exited through Naabi Gate which is the eastern gate of the park where there is a short and worthwhile climb to a lookout over the endless plains.
The drive to Ngorongoro Crater went through Maasai lands and it was here that we stopped in a Maasai Village for an optional tour. Calvin had done a Maasai Village tour before so he stayed behind while everyone else went in to the village to experience Maasai life. During the welcome dance, Kate was selected to participate in the dancing and was given a beaded necklace to wear. General consensus was that it was very touristy and probably not recommended – a large part of the tour is encouraging tourists to buy their beaded jewellery, seeing the kids in a school (even though the school is currently closed for the holidays!) with a large donation box.
There was a huge storm up ahead at the crater however it had passed by the time our truck got to the top. The rain did make the dirt roads very muddy though, but Dan, our driver, got through without fishtailing too much!
We camped on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater at Simba Campsite A. We had hot showers here, which were very welcome since the weather was quite cool due to being on the top of a volcano.
At night, some buffalo came into the camp near our truck and tents! Buffalo can be very aggressive so we stayed well clear of them! Flo almost walked into one – she was going to throw the dirty dishwater away but luckily she saw the buffalo and came running back!
