Soongies' Great Adventure
What an amazing morning we had! We decided that we were going to get to the 9:30 am Wieliczka Salt Mine tour so we checked out of our accommodation and drove the 20 mins to the mine. As was the case with Auschwitz, there were all these random parking areas with unofficial looking attendants directing traffic and telling us how much parking would cost. We didn't know if it was legit but we paid our dues and checked on the internet afterwards - looks like it's all somewhat legit! The mine opened in the 13th century and produced table salt continuously until 2007. The salt mine tour lasted a couple of hours. In that time we went down 800 steps and walked a few kms but the tour only took us to 1.5% of the mine! Crazy! The best part of the mine is all the statues and rooms carved out of salt. St Kinga's chapel made entirely from salt, including the chandeliers, was incredible! The air was so salty, Kate could taste it on her lips! At the end of the tour we got given a 10% discount card for the restaurant so we made the most of it with a Milka icecream each. Afterwards we took the mine shaft lift back to the top (thankfully we didn't have to climb 800 steps up to the top!). There were 9 of us squeezed into the shaft lift! We then drove the 3 hours to Wrocław (pronounced Vrotzwaff, not Rockclaw). Kate, still having feet issues, needed a visit to the sports store Decathlon. Kate was there a while so Calvin went across the road to the supermarket and stocked up a bit. We were both pretty starving by then so we had some Japanese teriyaki chicken at the shopping centre before driving to our Airbnb accommodation in central Wrocław. We walked into the centre and saw market square, the town hall and all the little gnomes that are scattered around. We had a light dinner at Pierogarnia. Kate had beetroot soup and Calvin had tomato soup and then we shared a dessert pierogi plate for dessert (including a 'raspberry, white chocolate and mint in chocolate dough' one). We then walked back to our apartment to rest.

kentishclan So did you lick a wall? Can you believe that all of the statues in the Chapel and relief work was carved by miners.. and not artists/sculptors? Crazy huh! Your parking comments made me laugh as I clearly remember the old weird dudes standing next to tarpaulin hut things charging for parking... and there's all these warnings about must use approved parking... and we're like - so... are THEY the approved parking? Meh... we'll go with it and just cross our fingers that we don't get a ticket for having done the wrong thing. :)
soongies Car parks are soooo dodgy. Calvin licked a wall - was tempted to chip off a cauliflower salt formation for use on food at another time. Big fan of salt!
