Jim and Sim's World Adventure
We left Blenheim to drive across to the west coast (Westport)and visited a seal colony at Cape Foulwind, which was a good name for it as it absolutely stank. The seals were cute thought they had their pups with them.
We then drove to Punakaiki and walked around the Pancake Rocks which as huge rocks made of loads of layers (hence the name pancake), water shoots up through the blow holes at high tide. Stayed at Hokitika on the evening and went for a walk along the beach which had massive pieces of driftwood lying all over it.
Visited Hokitika Gorge the next day which was amazing, the water was the bluest we have ever seen, really spectacular. The swing bridge over it was a bit dodgy but we made it!!!
Headed to the glaciers after that (Franz Josef and Fox). We walked up to both terminal faces which were quite impressive. We also walked around Lake Matheson which had reflective views of Mt Tasman and Mt Cook in the water. It was a really nice walk in the sunshine. We also visited another couple of lookouts while we were there that gave us different views of the glaciers.
We then drove to Wanaka, the drive was very beautiful, around the edge of the lake, with snowed capped mountains everywhere. We spent a couple of nights at Wanaka, and visited a winery (Rippon) and puzzling world, wehich kept us amused for hours and hours. Had lunch by the lake which was very relaxing.
We then drove to Queenstown which is a really nice place, right on the edge of a lake. We took a day trip to Milford Sound which was great, the mountains were massive along the road and we stopped off on the way to take photos. A kea came to have a look at what was going on at one of the stops. When we got to Milford Sound we went on a boat trip on the sound itself. Saw the famous waterfalls and Mitre Peak and some more dolphins came and swam alongside the boat...A brilliant place to visit.
Heading off to Mount Cook next...
