Last day in Yogya we relaxed and ate twice in our favourite Vegan restaurant Milas. It was time for another sleeper train aarghh.....We are eventually trying to get to Bali which is off the eastern coast of Java, so it is a huge trek. We were trying to get there in time for Ramadan (1st August) as eating during the day is a no no, but our trip has had some good diversions so it is taking a little longer. We were travelling eksekutif again, the train leaving Yogy at 01:30am. To my surprise the train was quite modern (last 10 years), air con, reclining seats, very spacious and a free blankie for us both. I fell asleep pretty quickly.... Paul decided to do some work on his photos - since meeting the freelance photographer (last blog) he wants to up his game and do some post production stuff (see 'South east asia art shots' album and thumbnail for this blog). At 04:30 they turned the TV screens on and turned the air con to freezing to wake everyone up - a sales ploy to get people to buy souvenirs and breakfast. I was prepared....well sort of Paul rescued my earplugs from the case and with both blankies I was back to sleep again. The train arrived in Malang on time 7 and a half hours later. We had a short walk to our hotel - Helios, another great value room. We will post some photos. Our room wasn't ready so we dumped our bags and strolled into town. Malang is the most upmarket place in Indonesia that we've been to. The streets are paved with ... well... the streets are paved so that's a novelty for a start. Beautiful park grounds in front on the town hall, tree lined avenues and a fast flowing river runs through the town. We walked to the flower (bunga) market - yes Bunga Bunga just means flowers. Then a stop at the bird market which had an array of creatures - owls, parrots, chickens, monkeys, rabbits, lizards, bats. The smell was starting to make me gag a little. We crossed a bridge overlooking the river below, I spotted something floating downstream it looked like a dead body... we realised it was a dead cat, somewhat inflated by its drowning (sorry animal lovers). We watched it float slowly off downstream past a man squatting into the river. Later we were to see another man doing the same business. We finally visited a recreation park, with pony rides, mini jeeps and a swimming pool for the kids and aviaries and a deer enclosure. We had a blow out this evening at a very nice restaurant in a top hotel in town. Amazing value at £27 for two courses and drinks. Tomorrow we plan to visit a couple of temples / stupas and enjoy a trip and walk out into the country. We have also booked the final leg of the journey to Bali - a tour to the Bromo region an area of active volcanoes, some trekking in the Ijen volcanic area also. This is a two day, one night tour that ends with the ferry crossing to Bali.
