Shaun on the Road
Well, I got back from Easter Island yesterday, and what a great trip it was. Here are a few of the details.
I got there in the evening and was greeted by the entire town on the Island. They all seem to own hotels and want you to stay in them. I got a camping site and set up camp before it got dark. Walked around the south end of the Island on Monday, a total walk of 9 hours. I was quite tired after that, but the walk was well worth it. Some cool caves, of course the statues, or Moai, and great ocean views.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I spent walking around the Island. The total time on foot was 15 hours and would have been more, but I hitched a ride for the last 10km or so from a couple of locals. I saw more Moai (there are over 400 of these things on the Island) camped on the beach, swam in the clear, blue ocean, saw 'the navel of the world', drank countless litres of water (I think it was a little warmer here than at home), and (fortunatly) didn't get chased by the cows with the huge horns.
On Friday I rented a motorbike and put about 175km on the thing. I had run out of sun cream the day before, so I got a little bit of a burn on my arms and my legs, but it could have been worse. On Friday evening the Easter Island festival started, so I went with five people from my camp to walk around and sample the local food and watch some dancing. A lot of fun, but I think that the meat may have been a little undercooked. Like the song 'Flagpole Sitter' goes, I'm not sick, but I'm not well.
I left on Saturday, and that was probalby a good thing. A great experience, but the Island is too small for more than 7 days. Just the right amount of time.
I am off to Rio today (Sunday) so I'll send you all a postcard when I get there.
