I have covered a lot of distance since I wrote last, so here is a little update. I left Japan as planned on the evening of the 3rd, flying into Melbourne. Probably a good thing. You can go bankrupt very fast in that country. Landed in Melbourne on the 4th in the morning and hung out in the city for a day and a half. A cool place, but I think it would be better in the summer.
