A drier morning so we packed the car and walked a few miles round the lakeside. It was warm (T Shirt weather) Our friends decided not to join us. Pete and I walked for 2 or 3 miles until we got attacked by the dreaded sand flies. These are tiny black flies with VERY sharp teeth and they show no mercy. We returned to Wanaka with sore ankles and legs. Picked up our friends and started north towards Fox Glacier. The drive was stunning. The sun came out and the temperatures reached 26. There was snow on the tops and waterfalls everywhere. We stopped off for a picnic lunch by the side of a lake. It was an idyllic spot until.....you guessed it. The dreaded sandfly arrived again. It was a rapid lunch. We arrived in Fox Glacier and went to view the Glacier. Unfortunately we did not get on the ice as you have to pay a guide to take you and the only trip we could go on was fully booked. Found our Motel for the night then sat in the hot sunshine and had a beer before dinner.
Time is running out fast. Tomorrow we have to hand the car back. All good things come to an end.
