Wellington - capital city of New Zealand. Great place, it is compact and built around a large harbour where all kinds of boats are anchored.
As usual we have walked our legs off. First around the town, then we took the cable car up to the topside of the towns botanical gardens. At the top we learned that there are around 400 private cable cars in the area. People building houses on high ground put in a private cable car then they can get all the building supplies up on site and have a house with spectacular views of Wellington harbour. Quite novel really and the view really is worth seeing. There is a footpath back into the city which meanders through the botanical gardens, which are beautiful. The roses in particular were a sight. All in bloom and no disease or dead blooms to be seen.
This afternoon we visited Te Papa the museum of New Zealand. Here we learned about earthquakes, and even experienced what one felt like. (We nearly did that for real). There was also an exhibition on Gallipoli which was very well done and very moving.
Exhausted now we are resting as we have to be up with the lark for an early ferry to the South Island tomorrow. As the car has to stay on this side, it means we have to collect all the loose bits and pieces from the car and repack our bags.
We are still hoping that we have another car waiting on the other side. It's a long walk without one!
