So for the next couple of weeks 2 would become 5!!! Our flight into Jakarta from Penang was well timed with Trevs arrival so we met up with him at the airport. Audrey and Mark had landed in earlier but we were nice enough to wake them up at 1am when we got into the hostel!!!
It was only then we found out that it was a long weekend in Indonesia, and the only way to get to our first destination was on a very bumpy 10 hour bus ride, or on the wooden benches in the train...neither sounded that appealing so we had a rethink and changed where we were going to head...this being Asia this wasn't an easy change....2 taxi rides and 2 train stations later we were booked onto a train to Yogyakarta....we weren't sure exactly how long it would take or where we would call into, but at least we knew we would be on our way!
The train was the slow night train, filled with lots of random stops, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, so we arrived into our hostel at 4am...just got settled into our beds, and in order to make us feel really welcome, just as we were about to fall asleep morning prayer started!!! So needless to say we weren't at our most productive that day!!!
However we did manage to go for a small stroll around the city, taking in the bird market. Which had lots of different animals all up for sale, we didn't see anything too crazy, just a lot of cats, dogs, birds and the odd komodo dragon!!!!
At 4am, the time we had got to bed the previous evening, we were up and on our way to a sunrise lookout. We watched the sky lighten, showing 2 volcanoes as well as Borobudur, a very important Buddhist temple we were going to see next. It was very atmospheric due to all the morning mist hanging over the valley. It was a great sight and not a bad way to start the morning.
After watching the sunrise we made the short journey to the temple itself. Luckily we were there nice and early as about 20mins after we arrived the place was invaded by local school kids.....who wanted to take pictures with all the tourists!!! Not sure exactly why they do it, but it was amusing to see who could rack up the most requests!!! We think Trev won, but we have our suspicions he was offering himself for pictures towards the end!!!!
The temple itself is covered with picture stories, with such fine carving it is easy to forget how old they are. Next up was the small Mendut Temple, which holds a 3m statue of Buddha. Again the buildings are so impressive when you remember when they were built and the kinds of tools they would have been using.
From there we headed to Prambanan, a Hindu temple. The journey between the temples was also a highlight. We got to see all the rice paddies, as well as other crops like peanuts and chillis. It was great seeing the countryside....and in virtually every direction there was a volcano dominating the view!
Prambanan is huge temple that suffered extensive damage in the 06 earthquake. It is still impressive to see, and there is a huge amount of repair going on. It was also roasting hot, so we weren't hanging around the place too much! As before there were school kids everywhere wanting to take our picture!!! We turned the tables on one group, with Phil getting into a picture with them...don't think they knew what to make of that!!!
By the time we were done we were pretty much templed out....so that evening we sat down to decide where next!!! It wasn't too hard a decision, we wanted a beach!!! After realising that it was about 15e more, and 19 hours less, we decided to fly rather than bus into Dempasar.
One culinary highlight of our time here was trying cobra sate!!! The feedback varies from it was ok, wouldn't try it again to it was tasty...more snake please!!! So draw your own conclusions from that!!
