We arrived in Santos at 6am after a 6 hour bus journey from Curitiba. I went charging off to find the bus to no avail i returned to the bus station then I saw the massive local bus station behind me where almost every bus in Santosjtjk stops god knows how i didn't notice this before, eventually we found are bus and
attempted to find the hostel which was an epic fall, we did a round trip and ended up back at the bus station none the wiser where the hostel was due to the terrible directions on hostel world. Take 2, we got back on the bus looking for the uni near the hostel we got off on the road we thought then attempted to find it on foot which again was a fail, so we manned up and did what most travellers do (I think) and got a taxi. It turns out we wasn't far.
Checking in at 8am seriously needing energy for the night ahead we were told are room would not be ready until 2pm. We crashed out on the sofa till then, ESPN and wifi kept us going. We got in are room early and a four hour nap later I was ready to celebrate my birthday.
It was about 5 by now and I hadn't had a drink, I thought this was shocking behaviour, this was soon corrected! The people at the hostel made me a chocolate cake they presented if to me and all sang happy birthday, this could have been embarrassing but I was drunk as you can image so it was fine. We set off into old town Santos full of people, bars, clubs and street music a fantastic place to spend my birthday I think we were the only none Brazilians out after a few more drinks the rest of the night becomes a nttblur.
The next day did not consist of a lot of a activity. ESPN and a trip to the beach filled the day. We did watch the Santos game which is sort of cultural, maybe!
It's Monday and I'm feeling fresh and ready to see the city. We rented bikes from the hosteli that didn't get charged to our account (bonus). The first stop on the bike was the Santos FC museum. It's filled with Pele memorabilia which was fascinating on the evidence of this room Pele was defiantly the greatest footballer that ever lived end of. I noticed a Villa flag from the game between the two sides in 1972 which villa won 2 - 1 on display. Neymars medal for winning FIFA goal of the year was on show to, among loads of trophies that Pele would have won single handedly back in the day.
We then went on a tour of the ground the guide showed us the box where Neymars family sit, it was covered in pictures of him we was told this had something to do with his ego. We then went into the press room and saw the chapel where the players pray before a match. After that it was on to the dressing room. Each player has there own locker with there picture on. Pele's locker is still there, on his final game for Santos in 1974 he put a lucky charm in there to give luck to the team in the future. The locker remains locked to this day and the key is with his family. Nobody knows the contents of the locker.
We left the Santos ground to finish are bike Ride in the 35 degree heat down the beach. We stumbled across some cable cars. We paid 15 reals for the ride which took you to the top of a mountain for fantastic views of the city. We also saw people kite surfing which looked amazing if not a little scary.
So that was are time in Santos next stop Paraty a week of chilling and saving money for carnival, well hopefully.
