Saz and Dave's travels
Today we decided to venture out from Bophut and take a look at Chaweng Beach, the largest beach and town on Koh Samui. We hailed down a songtheaw which we only had to share with another 2 people and got to Chaweng beach in about 20 minutes.
The main purpose of this excursion was to book our transport down from Koh Samui to Malaysia when we leave on Tuesday, so the first thing we did was go to a travel agent. However when we enquired about the overnight train, which we were kind of relying on getting, we were told all the trains for the next MONTH were booked up. We were pretty shocked as we really didn't fancy getting a bus all the way down through Southern Thailand to Malaysia. We thought the woman (who was a moody cow) may have been lying and decided to check out a different company. The 2nd travel agent however told us that they did not book train tickets as the trains through Southern Thailand are unsafe and may have bombs planted on them! Not letting this defeat us and thinking it may be 3rd time lucky, we went to yet another travel agent. However we were up for a big disappointment when the woman behind the desk confirmed that all the trains were fully booked for the next month and we would have to get a bus all the way to Hat Yai on the border and then another bus to Penang in Malaysia where we would have to get a further bus to the Cameron Highlands. On the plus side, the bus was a lot cheaper than the train and it only cost us 7 quid each to get to Hat Yai where we would ahve to sort out our connecting bus.
After booking our bus, we decided to get lunch and were drawn into one of the first restaurants we passed by the enticing smell of pizza. This was one of the only times we didn't properly check out the menu before sitting down and it was only when we were inside that we realised we may have been about to be ripped off! The place looked like it was used as a hostess bar in the evening with its tiger stripe furnishings and paitings that very closely resembled female parts! We really shoiuld have left at that point but we ended up getting overpriced pizza and coke with a hidden 5% service charge slapped on top.
After lunch we had a wander around Chaweng. The place was really nothing special and the beach although stunning was very crowded. We realised how nice the place we are staying is and decided from this point there was not much point travelling around the island to other beaches when our's seemed best. At one point we had contemplated getting a motorbike and going around the island like in Phuket but we have seen so many tourists with motorbike injuries since we got here that we thought this was probably not a good idea.
After walking round the town for a while we started to feel very hot and tired and I started to develop a blinding headache which made my already painful earache even worse (which developed yesterday along with deafness of the left ear, much to Dave's annoyance). We eventually managed to get a share taxi after 3 drove straight past and got back to our bungalow mid-afternoon. I then had to take some tablets and lie in the dark for the next few hours as I was feeling pretty rough. Dave took advantage of this by reading his book and making use of his headtorch!
