Saz and Dave's travels
YO YO YO IT'S ME AGAIN, ill try not to make it too long!
This morning we decided to have a little lie in as we had a stressful day yesterday, made worse by the dreadful Thai trance music which went on until god-knows what time keeping me awake. So when we finally got up we thought it would be a good idea to be healthy and we had a breakfast of porridge and bananas which was delicious. We also got our first views on Bophut beach in day time, which was beautiful, despite having 5 or 6 stray dogs wandering around. Also while eating breakfast, we were continually visited by these strange birds that walked really close to us, puffed out their feathers and sang at the top of their voices, bizarre.
After breakfast we went back to the room and realised that today was Thai new years day, so immediately got ready and headed out to have a look around Bophut and to watch the festivities. We had been warned previously about new year, where basically everyone grabs a bucket of water and proceeds to drench everyone else, so sounded like a good laugh. On the way to the main road however Sarah unfortunately kicked a rock and took a layer of skin off her big toe. The first thing i realised about this was Sarah squeezing my arm so hard that all of fingernails almost broke my skin. So we quickly got back to the bungalow, covered the cut with a plaster and headed back out again, paying close attention to the road this time.
On the main road, it took all of 3 minutes before we witnessed first hand the new years celebrations, where a pick up truck, with about 7 kids in the back each with a pan and a drum of water all lobbed pan fulls of water at us and started laughing manically. Luckily only a small percentage of the water hit me, and I happened to be stood in front of Saz who then started laughing at me completely bone dry! We thought we could then avoid a further soaking by turning off the main road and making for the local Fisherman's Village, however we couldn't have been more wrong. As we perused the line of shops, practically all of which were closed as it was new year's day, loads of Thai kids started throwing more water over us as well as flour, all wishing us happy new year. At least it wasn't buckets like on the road, however trust the Brits abroad to pick up on that one and as we walked a little further past some bars they all, armed with buckets, washing up bowls and super soakers, maliciously covered us from head to toe in water, even at one point shouting "There is no way you're staying that dry" and "Look get her bag wet, it's still dry!". That annoyed us a little, so we decided to avoid the road by walking back down the beach to our bungalow.
We spent the rest of today chilling on the free sun loungers on the beach outside the bungalows, occasionally venturing off for a swim. The sand on the beach was a little course, but this isn't too bad as it means it doesn't stick to you or get your towel all sandy, and the beach was pretty quiet with fairly deep water too. What more could you ask for.
While we were relaxing on the beach, we noticed that the fella renting jet skis had a steady stream of customers, so thought we'd investigate how much we'd be looking at paying for a blast. The guy told us it was 500B for 15 minutes, so we immediately walked away and decided that we may jet ski somewhere else as this guy was making around 30quid an hour, a little much for us budget travellers.
Later, we had tea at a local restaurant and agonised as to whether we should go to the full moon party on Koh Phag Ngan or not, but I being an old man (almost 22 now and everything) decided i couldn't be bothered, much to Sarah's disappointment. However we still had a lovely evening as during dinner, the locals set off loads of flying lanterns, which were ACE and then finished the evening with an after dinner ice cream and a walk down the beach.
