Got up early to watch the sunrise and have breakfast before setting off on the second half of our hike. The walking today was much easier and we quickly reached the end of the high walk and had lunch at Tina's guest house. After lunch we decided to tackle the lower rapids. We had heard varying reports of how long this would take us - from 40 minutes to 3 hours and it turned out to be 3 hours down and another 3 back up!! The start of the path was a little worrying but about halfway down you could pay 10 yuan to use a 'safe' path. This was slightly better although the loose sand underfoot made the going slow. At the bottom we saw the rapids and the place where legend has it that a tiger leaped across the gorge to escape a hunter - hence the name. Climbing back up we had the choice of a 'safe path' or a 'dangerous ladder'! We went for the path option a clinging onto a verticle ladder for 40 minutes did not not appeal to me although this probably doubled the time of the journey. Once back up the top, the Australian girls headed off back to Lijiang and I hung around looking for someone to share the costs of transport to Shangri-la. I found a group of Austrian guys who were willing to let me share their mini-bus, but when it arrived they could barely get in themselves and although they insisted they had room for me I felt bad about making them so uncomfortable. Instead I waited for Jana and Philip and the group they had joined as I knew they were heading my way. When the arrived they were quite late and so we all decided to go back to Jane's guesthouse in Qiaotou village and stay the night.
