WOW!! Machu Picchu is awesome!!
So we woke up early, had a quick breakfast (so tired of bread, jam and scrambled eggs!!) then headed down the road to the train station which would take us from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu.
The train was fun, you even got a little snack and me and Nikkie drank some Inca Kola yum yum, the bright green/yellow pop is quite scrumptious hehe! After the train it was a bus journey up to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
Jonathon took us around the ruins, the views are stunning! and he also explained about them , we saw remains of palaces, storage rooms, houses, baths etc it is rather incredible!!
After the tour a few of us headed off to climb Wayna/Huayna Picchu (that tall mountain in the background!!) they only allow 400 people to climb it each day (they let about 2500 into Machu Picchu itself) and once you start trekking you can see why!
The Incas built a trail up the side of the Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on the top of it. The climb is steep and exposed and knackered me out, especially after 3days of trekking! I did get stuck in a small cave that you have to climb through ...nobody told me you had to climb through a stupid cave!! but finally, once I was removed, we arrived at the peak...
The peak of Huayna Picchu is about 2,720 metres above sea level, about 360 metres higher than Machu Picchu, therefore the views down over Machu Picchu are incredible!
We sat and admired the views for a while, ate a banana (well actually I ended up chucking it, I knew they were gross! not entirely sure why I decided to eat it!) and then headed back down to Machu Picchu which was just as difficult as the climb!
When we finally made it down we went for some yummy lunch, had a nosey around the shops and then headed back to the train station where we met up with the rest of our group.
That evening we made the journey back to Cusco and headed out for a late dinner and drinks for Toms birthday...
