Another lazy morning we were finding it hard slowing down because we have got used to being non stop on the trip. The weather wasn’t the best so we had a few hours by the pool then decided to go into the historic centre & see if the drummers were performing today as it was a Tuesday which is the main day for them. We got a taxi to the Bay Area it was really run down & some locals were even washing underneath an overflow pipe next to some shabby buildings. We took the elevator up to the main historic centre, the Elevador Lacerda is a Historic art deco elevator with scenic views of the bay connecting the upper & lower parts of Salvador. It is basically just an elevator which cost 8p to use but it’s a big tourist attraction. The heavens opened & the heavy rain caused chaos for all the street sellers who were trying to escape the downpour! Luckily it didn’t last long, we walked down to the Pelourinho but there wasn’t many people around. We visited the San Francisco church & convent which dates back to 1708 & took around 15 years to complete we stepped inside & were dazzled by the extravagance of the art & ornamentations. Everything from the ceiling to the pillars & vaults are covered in gold leaf. It was absolutely spectacular, a huge choir were in full swing & sounded great. Some of the ladies were dancing in the aisle & it reminded me of the film sister act with the nuns singing & rejoicing. We went into a nice restaurant just off the plaza the food wasn’t the best but It didn’t help that we didn’t know what we were ordering! We got a taxi back to the hotel & watched football in the bar with a few gins. We sat next to a group of American & English tv directors discussing making a program in Brazil, it was quite funny listening to their plans & upcoming project. We booked on a tour for the following day to a turtle sanctuary & beach tour.
