Sam the all star Trecker
The day after my bday me and Vic decided it was time to leave Cairns however the wheather wasnt great and we didnt really want to go and sit on the beach in the rain. Therefore we decided to go to Kuranda.
It was a little Hilly Billy village about half an hour from Cairns! Everyone was trying to get us to book a day trip to Kuranda through an agent but we thought we would do it properly and take it upon ourselves to get to Kuranda stay a night and then do the sky rail through the forest and the Aboriginal night all by ourselves. So we managed to get on a tiny little bus full of smelly weird people and travelled to Kuranda which cost us about a pound which was bizarre! Got a little worried about the people that were on the bus as they were very weird and obviously didnt get out much! Arrived and saw lots of tourists and stuff so had a sense of satisfaction that we had arrived some where decent for half the price that it would have cost through an agent. Then we got dropped at a backpackers place. Went inside and couldnt find anyone. There were cobwebs everywhere and looked like no one had stayed in a good while. We waited around for someone to come and check us in but noone came so we travelled up the road a bit to this motel. We managed to blag a room for 50 dollars 25 pound between us which we thought was good. We had a little kitchen kettle and everything. So that night decided to look around and there was noone about it was completely deserted at 4pm! Apparently the park closes at 3:30 and everyone goes home. So we were stuck with nothing to do. Managed to find a shop and brought some soup and pitta breads for dinner and sat in and watched tv. The next day we got the sky rail to Jabaki (the aboriginal show) and went over the rainforest. Learnt a lot about trees and aboriginals! Was quite bizarre. Then managed to hunt down the one bus that would take us back to Kuranda for another nights stay in hill billy land. This night though we got dressed up and hit the Motel bar which was full of hill billy locals and had the nicest meal and got quite drunk on 2 bottles of wine! One other traveller had managed to track us down as the village people must have told him about the 'two girl travellers'. So we spent the night with him. Got quite upset when we found out this bar,the only bar around, shut at 9, sulked a lot and tried to persuade them to do a lock in but instead managed to get the staff back to our room for a little after party. Anyway funniest way of life. It is nice to do something different to what everyone else does now and then even if it is a little bit random!! The next day travelled back to Cairns ready to jump on the Oz experinec the next day to head south !~
