Yesterday was our last full day in Varkala. We spent the morning on the beach and watched as the fishermen auctioned their catch. After lunch we thought we should take a look in some of the shops on the cliff. Everyday the women sitting outside try to get us inside to have a look.
We made a point of not going in the first couple. The women seem rude. One we heard shouting, "it doesn't cost anything to look, Madame" as a westerner walked by.
We went in to one of the shops further down, Pete was looking for some trousers. Once we were in the woman followed and started pulling trousers out of their packets. She then told us how she hadn't had any trade for two days and has to pay her boss, she explained how upset she was at everyone walking past and not going in. Then she started crying. The two of us stood there uncomfortably, rummaging through the trousers. The tears stopped and Pete chose a pair he liked. He asked for a price but she said to make an offer. He went in low. 100 rupees (about £1.20). She then went in high at 650 rupees. He tried and tried to bring her down. The woman saying "don't break my heart, blah blah blah." We finalise the deal at 380 but she was still asking for more. He then realised he couldn't give her a 500 note as he wouldn't get anything back so we both stood looking through our wallets to find enough change, trying not to let her see the few thousand rupees we each had.
This morning we got up early and went for breakfast to a place we called 'The Shack'. It was a tiny little wooden shed with a few tables and chairs. We sat down with the locals and the woman brought us a curried vegetable stew with some rice pancakes. It was out first experience eating with our hands (well right hand) and we managed not to make too much of a mess!
