We took our first train journey and we have now arrived at our second destination, Varkala. The train journey was interesting, first of all the trains are incredibly long with different types of cars, we were booked onto the basic chair car, however once the train had pulled in and we had found the carriage there was no room so we sneaked into a sleeper car. When the ticket inspector came round he didn't bat an eye lid....phew! We met another couple who are travelling, Sam and Mel who did the same as us.
We got a bus with them down to the beech where we are staying for a few nights. We are glad not to be woken up at 5.30 each morning by the bell outside calling for morning prayer or the builders inside smashing tiles.
We met up for drinks with them and they have given us some good advice on getting about and places that are a must see.
Varkala is nice and chilled out with hotels, restaurants and shops lining the cliff edge. There are lots of little Tibetan shops here, the place has a lot more character than Kovalam. Our favourite place here at the moment is a place outside out hotel called The Juice Shack which sell amazing smoothies with all different combinations.
Like Kovalam, Varkala also suffers with frequent power cuts, luckily they haven't lasted too long.
