From Udaipur we travelled north to Jaipur, stopping off at Pushka on the way. Pushka was a small place, and like Udaipur it is set by a lake. It was rather quaint but very busy as there was a camel fair which they have every year.
We then arrived at our hotel in Jaipur. We were rather excited as they told us we had hot water 24 hours a day, this was a real treat. At our previous hotel we asked what time the hot water was on. We were told it was on in the morning. Kate got up and had a freezing cold shower. As soon as she got out the phone rang and they asked if we would like hot water. "Of course" we said, expecting them to switch it on, but two minutes later there was a knock at the door. We opened it to find a man with a bucket of boiling hot water, not what we expected but Pete had a good splash around.
Once we had settled in to our room we went for a walk trying to find some food for Pete. There wasn't really anything close by so we went back to the hotel and ordered a cheese and tomato toasty which was surprisingly good. We've had some bad experiences with so called cheese over here. It's a bit of a gamble of what you will get when you order it, but this one paid off.
After a long sleep and a hot shower we headed for the sights. Firstly the City Palace which was nice but not as breathtaking as the other palaces we had seen. Every palace, fort or temple we go to we get the audio guides, we find looking round a bit boring if we don't know what we are looking at, and the guide always tell you interesting stories about the place. We've become a bit addicted to the audio tours and started rating them on the design of the audio player, the headsets and the narrative.
We then crossed the road to the Jantar Mantar. This is an observatory built in 1728 by the same man who built the palace. We both thought this would be very interesting but the information on the audio tour went straight over our heads. We managed to understand that most of the structures were sun dials and some could tell you how far something in the sky was from the earth, but we haven't got a clue how.
After this we went to the Amber Fort and Palace. This was beautiful as it sat in the hills behind a lake with zig zagging paths leading up to it. Unlike most of the other forts and palaces this didn't have any artefacts inside. The rooms were empty and there was no direction so it was a bit like walking round a derelict palace, this was fun though. At one point a class of school girls decided to follow Kate around, they surrounded her and stared and giggled, it was funny. The teacher just looked at Kate apologetically.
Inder then took us for some lunch. "Good food, cheap food" he said. We got there and Inder pointed to the upstairs of a building which was where we were going to have lunch, it really didn't look inviting from the outside. We went in and it was full of locals (which is always a good sign), all of whom seemed to leave when we arrived. We let Inder choose some dishes for us which we're so tasty. Inder then took us to a shop where they showed us how they printed fabric with wooden stamps. After the young lad finished explaining this to us he tried to sell us some but failed. We then sat chatting whilst waiting for our tea. We noticed he had some tattoos across his hand. We asked what it said and he kept saying it was very popular in England. In the end we read it as JACK across one hand and ROSE across the other. Still not understanding he said that Kate should know. In the end he told us that it was Jack and Rose from the Titanic. We had to hold ourselves back from bursting out laughing as the guy was being deadly serious.
The next day we visited The Albert Hall. Unlike the one in London this was specifically built as a museum and was very interesting. There were artefacts from all around the world, we found it quite odd that some were just replicas. We then visited another fort just behind Amber fort. This one housed a huge cannon which needed four elephants to manoeuvre. It could fire over twenty miles but had only ever been fired once as a test. From here you had a lovely view over the lakes below. From one end of the fort you could see lots of monkeys relaxing in the shade, some were grooming each other and others were playing around with the babies.
All in all we liked Jaipur and it's many bazaars that lined the streets of the old city.
