We spent our last day in Hampi looking at some more temples. We got a tuk tuk (aka auto-rickshaws) to the elephant temple expecting to see some elephants. Unfortunately it was just where they used to house the ceremonial elephants 500 years ago, the buildings were amazing though. We then went to the monkey temple on the other side of the river.
To get there we had to cross the river, unfortunately the bridge had fallen down so we had to get a boat over. This boat was the size of a large canoe with an engine but they still managed to strategically get 5 motorbikes and us on!
There were a few hundred steps to climb to the monkey temple which sits on the top of a mountain. We bought 10 bananas for the monkeys. On our rest break climbing the steps one monkey ran over and grabbed the bag with the bananas in and ate them all. We tried to scare him off but he snarled and showed his teeth. We thought best to leave him be as we didn't want to get bitten. The view from the top was amazing, the video we have uploaded shows the views.
We then took the tuk tuk to a river crossing closer to where we were staying. The little boat wasn't going for half hour so a couple of young lads offered to take us over in a small boat. Not sure if you could call it a boat. It was similar to a wicker basket with a skin underneath. This was meant to stop the water coming in but by the time we got to the other side it was half full of water and Kate had a very wet bum. It didn't help that Pete fell over which caused it to fill up even more. That evening we left to get our bus.
So from Hampi we took a 9 hour bus journey to Goa. This was no ordinary bus, instead of seats they had two levels of beds which were remarkably comfortable and we managed to have a good nights sleep. That is until the bus dropped us off at 4.30 am where luckily some tuk tuk's were waiting. We jumped in one and headed to Palolem beach. Our plan was to sit and watch the sun come up, get some breakfast then find somewhere to stay. Fortunately a man found us sitting on the beach and took us to his guest house which is dirt cheap for the area and actually quite nice.....right result!
We slept for a couple of hours then had breakfast and laid on the beach for the remainder of the day.
In the evening we took advantage of the buy one get one free on beers and cocktails at Cafe Del Mar. Surprisingly there has been a place called Cafe Del Mar at every place we have been so far (as well as German bakery's). As Kate has not been drinking much while we've been away the mojito's went straight to her head. Followed by the G & T where half that glass was filled with gin (they serve spirits in 60ml measures), the following morning was not a happy one.
It's nice being in a holiday resort for a change, there are lovely bars and restaurants lining the beach.
Friday night we went to a restaurant that set tables up on the beach, it was lovely having dinner under the stars. We chatted to a couple from Bangalore who were keen to hear about our trip and giving us advice on Delhi. Apparently the north of India is absolutely mental compared to the 'chilled' south!!! But they have told us that the north, in particular Rajasthan will be that best place for Diwali, we are really excited about that!
Yesterday was a bit overcast, so we decided to chill on the beach and play Uno which Kate had bought at the shop on the way down. After playing for a few minutes a couple of Indian guys asked to join in. Unfortunately for Pete he wasn't very good and lost the first few games. However one of the guys took pity on him and was helping him out and changed his losing streak into a winning one.
Any way we are getting used to seeing cows everywhere, they never seem to belong to anyone. In Mysore city they were just roaming the busy roads and here they just chill out on the beach, it's very funny! Another thing which we find funny in these beach resorts is that it is where a lot of Indians come for there holiday, it's funny watching them play in the sea fully clothed!
We are staying in Goa for a few more nights so we plan to relax and enjoy the beach.
