RolPol
The morning after... We woke up drenched in sweat, such a hot apartment and no aircon! Ros slept with frozen ice blocks. Pol tossed and turned all night. Next accommodation we're getting aircon! Ros trying to find our next accommodation...aircon a must! It's tiring work - Ros was not moving and still sweating! Pol was working as a towel boy for Ros. The room was a sauna! we had a visitor... Pol was not happy! We had a slight disturbance from a massive wasp! Pol freaked out, Ros couldn't move due to excessive sweating! But saved the day. Ros to the rescue! Ros was sitting with ice blocks on her head and under her arms, having to wipe face every few mins. About to head off to Portafino...Ros still wasn't happy about the heat! We left Menton and before we knew it we were in Italy! 12 hours and 3 countries - France, Monaco and Italy! Some pics along the way: (just after the border crossing into Italy! - Ros didn't have enough time for the camera to turn on and take a pic of the official border crossing sign!! We stopped for fuel over the border and some morning tea and good coffee! Ros was still speaking French! Italians are very loud! Different to the French! (Toll road!) There were so many tunnels! (last two pics: this guy had the most unstable load on his small car!) We found Italy also has tolls!! Speed limits in Italy on the tolls are the same as France but cars drive faster and overtake much closer!!! Getting into the city we're staying in Santa Margherita Ligure (near Portafino): This is scooter city!!!! The scoots overtook us on tight bends and were pretty close too - going in and around cars. Crazy! A LOT of Vespas around here!! Aircon!!! Ros relaxing her chops - note the dressing - before heading into Portafino Well educated pets allowed in the Hotel! Check out the 3 wheel...scooter? This is one of the main (and nearly only free beach) in the town. A lot of tourists...the water is dirty..we found a bandaid and various wrappers floating around us as we entered the water!! Bus to Portafino (note the different coloured sections on the beach - each section is a private beach that you have to pay for to use!) The road along the coast to Portafino is extremely narrow - barely squeezing a bus and an oncoming car..the sharpturns are narrower...the bus driver honks the horn a couple of times before taking a sharp turn - you can't see what's oncoming at times!! Portafino - A small fishing port first becoming famous in the 50s and 60's by the rich and famous who chose to holiday there. (the big boat about the moore - on the right)... (there were so many staff members on this superyacht - both on the ship and on the marina awaiting to tie it down - with walkie talkies... it took a while but it was a smooth operation. The yachts/boats/ships don't have pens or much room next to each other to moore. It's a small port. These are really big ships in a tiny port...it doesn't seem like the water is deep enough for them...you can see the bottom. "The Cakewalk," we later googled is worth 150MILLION EUROS! It accommodates around 14 guests and 24 crew members! Castello Brown - and old castle that appears to have used as harbour defence since the 15th century (thanks wiki!) The port - from the walk toward the castle Very steep climb - to find the castle was closed...so we went back down again! Rose made a comment about this duck and whether he has to pay a cover charge to stand there... because after dinner we looked at the total and we both had paid 5 Euros to sit down in a chair at the table...PLUS a 15%surcharge for something...plus we were expected to pay a tip!!!! What is in front of Rose is complimentary at this Port bar - no minimum purchase of drinks required. Before this bar we randomly picked a restaurant to eat at... and we made the wrong choice! So expensive, tiny portions and average food. We were still hungry so we went to this bar to get the snacks! This place is unique...super yachts parked in a tiny port, beautiful architecture right along the coast and such a different world in terms of the crowd. We also noted a tonne of Russians around!
