The night we arrived in Acropolis, Athens was a massive debacle. We timed the Greece referendum perfectly to arrive in Athens amidst chaos in the main square – Syntagma on the Greek referendum night. We wish we had taken pictures of the government square that night where there was a massive Greek demonstration full of people and music at near 12am. We didn't have our accommodation address written in Greek on us, no mobile internet connection, it was pitch black and we were tired. Shortly after we found Taxi drivers - not only did they not know where we wanted to go but were not operating due to the referendum. What to do?! Still in Syntagma Square, a little tense and we had to make a decision soon; it was hitting midnight and not many people understood English. Our Air B & B accommodation was near The Acropolis so we decided to go back to the Metro (train) and go to Acropolis station. On arrival; we didn’t know where to go. Luckily we found a group of Policemen standing around their Honda 700’s (actually, we noticed on the days in Greece that the Police congregated in groups…having group discussion sessions next to their bikes….WHILE every (almost) motorbike and scooter rider going past was not wearing a helmet!! IT WAS ODD TO SEE A MOTORCYCLE/SCOOT RIDER WEARING A HELMET! – it seemed like the Police were waiting for something to happen close to where they were standing in order to do something about it- - Greeks!). Most of the street signs were in Greek and we had only English worded streets on a printed map. After the Policemen helped us trace rough directions on our little map we set off, in almost pitch darkness toward the Acropolis (which was looming over us). We managed to go the wrong direction for a couple of Km’s (Rose was getting tired and rather hot in the heat carrying bags). We were lost, couldn't find anyone who spoke a lot of English and to add to it; were tired, hot, thirsty, hungry and agitated. It was 1230am. So after retracing our steps…we were lucky to find our accommodation as the streets in the Plaka region of Greece are an absolute maze…and on multiple levels too....! Finally…as luck would have it we almost by random ran into a guy who helped us with our accommodation – Spiros (aka - Batman after 11pm - he was proud to tell us in his Greek accent and almost charade like arm and body gestures). He was waiting for us since 1130pm to show us into our accommodation. This is us – tired, thirsty and grumpy finally arrived in our little room and just put the bags down. No aircon in 30 degree heat. Couldn’t open windows due to mosquitoes. What to do!!!? …we saw the bathroom and wondered how we were going to shower in the morning. Time for a cold beer and a chat with Spiros aka batman. (Ros, Spiros and Polly) …2 shots of Mastika each later; we were ready for bed.
