Day 20: Setting off for a drive through visit to Canberra this morning, Gareth decided to head in completely the wrong direction out of the campsite. After working our way through herds of roo's the error became clear when the road ended in a car park.
We had mistakenly arrived at Orroral Space Centre, a now abandoned satellite and space shuttle monitoring station. This was one of several stations around Australia that NASA used to monitor satellites through the 60's and 70's, and later to communicate with it's astronauts on the shuttle. Now with it's radar antenna dishes removed and the buildings demolished so that only the foundations remain it is being reclaimed by nature, or specifically herds of roo's.
We now had to return back the way we had just come, and into Canberra. We drove round State Circle which contains Parliament House. We couldn't get a good view but the main building seems to be buried under a hill - a bit like the tellytubbies.
We then parked up near Old Parliament House and walked along the lake side. We admired a musical bell tower, and found a version of The Angel of the North statue, this one was the size of a person, not the giant icon of the North East.
We went into the National Gallery and wandered around admiring the various galleries, some things were good, some we didn't understand.
Back on the road and quickly out of Canberra, which is a tiny city compared to the main Australian ones. We stopped at Goulburn, first to admire the Big Merino, a giant replica sheep with a gift shop, then in the city for provisions.
Not gone far before we were pulling off the main highway and onto gravel road down to Wombeyon Caves where there is a large, but almost deserted camp site, except that is for the herds of Roo's and Wallabies who are surrounding our van as we cook tea. A fine and warm evening is making up for yesterdays rain.
But wait, what was that snuffling near our van as we were just thinking of turning in? A wombat in the shadows. The shy little guy turned tail as soon as Caroline turned her torch his way, but we stayed up a little longer to see if we would get a second glimpse. No such look.
