Day 16: More mountain driving today. Setting off from our camp near Mt Bogong we were headed to the east and the highest part of the Alps, Kosciuszko.
Heading east on the Alpine Way we first stopped at Talangatta, a town which was 'moved' in the 1950's to stop flooding from the Murray River. It happened to have a fine bakery and the biggest vanilla slices I've ever seen - we even had to share!
Suitably revived we continued through Snowy River Country stopping at Corryong to grab a pie (from another bakery that had amazing looking apple turnovers). Back into the mountains we stopped to eat our pies overlooking one part of the Snowy River Hydro Scheme which is pretty impressive. Not stopping too long we carried on up the winding roads having to let Buddy cool down - at this point the storm clouds which had been brooding most of the day let rip and we arrived into Thredbo in a massive downpour.
Rather disappointed with Thredbo, a fake alpine resort and like a ghost town on such a wet day we continued to Jindabyne where we'd seen a large campsite with good facilities. In the absence of any funky looking hotels we decided somewhere with indoor space would be a good idea. We were right.
Six hours of almost constant rain and the camp facilities are perfect - communal kitchen with stoves, sinks and fridges, even a pool table thrown in and lots of Roos nibbling on the grass.
Plan on having a hot shower and contemplate whether we climb Mt Kosciusko tomorrow when the forecast is 90% rain and we'll have spent most of the night listening to it from inside the van. Fingers crossed for a dry day!
