Brisbane to Melbourne, and back again.
Day 23: Rain! We tried to pretend we couldn't hear it, but there was no mistaking the thud of rain on the van roof when we woke. Yesterday's sunshine was gone, but thankfully the temperature had also dropped a little.
We set off for a walk into the bush regardless. Setting off from a few kms back down the gravel road from Newnes we were heading uphill following a long disused railway line to a tunnel through the sandstone cliffs which are now the home to glow-worms. Easy we thought. The path turned out to be harder work than we anticipated, the cliffs having given up a fair amount of loose boulders over the years, and land slips having removed sections of path. We made good progress none the less, until approaching the top where the path became a stream, so more paddling!
Arriving at the glow-worm tunnel, a railway tunnel hewn through the cliff face. The tunnel was surprisingly large, maybe 15feet tall and wide. We ventured in with our torches providing little light in the total darkness of the tunnel. We walked until we couldn't see the light from the entrance and turned off our flashlights (very Famous 5). Up above the glow-worms did their thing, giving an almost celestial feel to the top of the tunnel. We could make out lines which showed where there were ridges in the rock. Well worth the walk and paddle up. We ventured to the other end of the tunnel, then turned around and headed back.
Returning to Buddy, we headed off to Katoomba where we found shelter from the rain in the Pomegranate Cafe for a late lunch, then on to Scenic World. We first went on the Scenic Skyrail which is a cable car across a valley, the floor of the car was made of glass that was frosted when we set off, but changed to clear part way across the void.
Next we went down to the valley floor. We decided to go down on the train and back up on the cable car. The train is the worlds steepest at 52degrees to the horizontal. We should have realized what it would be like when they started to play the theme from Indiana Jones as we set off! A very funny journey to the valley bottom was followed by a sedate walk around the art trail at the bottom before the steady cable car back to the top.
In the evening we took a gentle stroll to some of the local lookouts to see the famous 3 Sisters rocks. The fog though initially blocked much off the view. We were patient, and eventually we were rewarded as the cloud lifted.
Back to our camp and hoping for better weather in the morning for our planned Grand Canyon walk.
