Day 4: big drive done successfully today!
Started today with a visit to the lighthouse at Seal Rocks. It was very similar to Smoky Cape and located on some stunning cliffs. The view wasn't quite as good, perhaps because the sun wasn't shining.
Our drive south the began. Gareth did the first section over the gravel road and onto the freeway. Caroline then did a long stretch to take us to the outskirts of Newcastle, then back over to Gareth to battle the traffic tithe south of Sydney.
Then it was time to relax. We joined the Grand Pacific Drive at the Bald Hill Lookout, and enjoyed a scenic drive. First stop Coalcliff which is clearly a weekend retreat for Sydney dwellers judging by the fact that it was deserted when we were there. Next we stopped to admire Seacliff Bridge, this was the highlight of the road, with the winding bridge following the contours of the cliffs. People had fastened padlocks to the railings of the bridge, each one with an engraved message.
Onwards to Wollongong, and New South Wales began to look like real South Wales, or specifically Port Talbet, as we drove through the drizzle past the steel works.
We stopped at Kiama for a coffee and to see the blowhole which was blowing away nicely in the light swell. It would be an impressive sight in a big sea.
We put in to the next campsite in the road south. At Seven Mile Beach. Caroline cooked up a feast on the BBQ whilst we sheltered from the rain.
Tomorrow is a big question mark, do we have a day heading further down the coast, or make our way towards the mountains??
