London Day 15
Our last full day in London! Our day did not start out that well as we locked the key in the flat. Thankfully our Airbnb host, Alessandro, is a great guy and was able to get in and get the key for us. We still had one thing left on our "must-see" list to cross off and we did that today. We are disciples of Rick Steves and his European guidebooks. In many of his books he has walking tours of certain sections of cities. We had done most of his London walks, but not the one for the southeast end of the city. Our walked started at the London Bridge (it was in no condition to fall down, thankfully) and continued to Southwark cathedral. We then hit the Burrough Market, which had some of the best street food I have ever had. We walked along the south bank of the Thames past the new Globe theatre and ended at the Tate Modern art museum. We are not huge fans of modern art, but the building it was housed in used to be a power plant and the huge turbine hall was kept intact. It is a very big and imposing indoor space. When we entered the Tate the Thames was at high tide and when we came out it had gone down considerably. I posted a couple of photos that show the kids on the same staircase two hours apart and you can see how much the height of the Thames had changed . To get to the nearest Tube stop we had to walk across a rain-soaked Millennium Bridge. The walk gave us some cool, misty views of the city. I think the rain means London is sad to see us leave. We took a packed tube back to the flat, had a grocery store dinner (again), and turned in for the night.
