Reykjavik Day17
This is it. I am writing this as we wait for our plane to take us back to Minneapolis. We arrived in Reykjavik at about 11:30 pm last night, got our bags, and took a cab to the hotel we had booked. The hotel was about two miles away in the town of Keflavik. Before we got in the cab, we asked if the driver if he took credit cards and he said yes. Once we got to the hotel and tried to pay, the machine did not work and we did not have any Icelandic money. The driver drove me to the closest ATM and, of course, that one was out of service. Thankfully the driver took American dollars, but it was the last thing I wanted to deal with at midnight in Iceland. We had breakfast at the hotel this morning and, with the nice women who ran the hotel's help, we hired a cab driver to take us in and around Reykjavik. Our driver's name was Thora Bjork Oscarsdotter. It was a 45 minute drive to Reykjavik and much of the drive reminded me of a green, wet, and cool Arizona. Our first stop was the modern performing arts center call the Harpa. It was situated right on the water so we walked along the pier and even saw a jellyfish. Next we saw the Hallgrimskirkja, the church that dominates the city's skyline. It is a modern, cool looking church that gave us great views of the city at the top of its tower. Thora then brought us to the Perlan (Pearl). It is another modern (shocking!) building that stand 25 meters high on a hill and also gave us some nice views of the city. We ended our time in Reykjavik at an excellent fish and chips shop near the old harbor. It was a good way to end a wonderful adventure. Thanks for tagging along. I hope you found it entertaining.
