Today we decided to head to Patong for a last beach day. This was mainly as our original plan to hire a car was scuppered by their being none available (probs a good thing, Phuket looks like it would be horrendous to drive around!). We took the Songthaew on the mountainous road to Patong, a kind of Thai version of Blackpool, and is full of overweight Germans in extremely tight speedos! Good for people watching and I experienced my first ever tuk-tuk journey on the way home. In the evening I felt pretty ill so unfortunately missed out on the adventure that is Loi Krathong, a full moon festival where the Thais send lotus flower shaped boats made of banana leaves and flowers topped with candles and incense down their local river. The hotel owner gave us two boats to float and Howellsey took them down to the river where there were hundreds of Thai families, kids throwing fire crackers, traditional dancers and food stalls. The full moon was pretty amazing and a special time to be in Thailand.
