Colleen & Tom's Explorations
So this morning we were up early, the first in to brekky. We packed and stored our luggage in the car before returning to reception where Russell, our tour guide for the day, collected us in his minibus. We joined 7 other tourists - 2 from Scotland, 2 from Germany, 2 from Melbourne and 1 from Belgium. First stop was Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas where we saw crocodiles, cassowaries, turtles, owls, wallabies, kangaroos, snakes. Unfortunately it started pouring while we were there, which somewhat diminished our pleasure and opportunities to see everything. From there we drove up to the Mossman Gorge where we were put into a different bus, run by the traditional owners of the land, and driven further into the rainforest where we did a 45 minute rainforest walk, in the rain. It was quite lovely, although we did not enjoy getting wet. As we continued north into the Daintree Rainforest, across the Daintree River by ferry, the rain stopped and the sun came out. We drove further north to Cape Tribulation and then walked down through the rainforest to Cape Trib Beach House where we had a delicious lunch, ordered earlier whilst on the bus. We walked further through the rainforest out to the beach where we could sit and enjoy the ocean, but not swim due to the stingers and crocs. On our return to the ferry stop we stopped off at a place where they make their own ice cream out of tropical fruits, and we were able to buy a little tub with four flavours in it: macadamia, passion fruit, wattle seed and chocolate pudding fruit. Then we were back on the bus to check out a lovely lookout that has views to the island where Steve Irwin was filming when he was killed by the sting ray :( We continued on the the ferry crossing where we got out and into a little riverboat to cruise the river looking for crocs and learning about mangroves etc. We saw a crocodile in the water but as we were getting closer and ascertained that it was indeed a crocodile...... He submerged! I got a photo.... We also saw the most beautiful Ulysses butterflies. After our river cruise we continued south to Port Douglas where we were dropped back to Peppers. We wandered downstairs to the car park and drove 1 block west to the Hibiscus Resort where we are staying for the next 5 nights. There was a bottle of Yellowglen in our fridge, which we happily drank with our Dominos Pizza for dinner, out on the deck, listening to the bats squabbling in the trees.
