Tuesday 9th September -
We had to be up at 04:00 this morning becasue we had to pack up camp and drive to the east coast beach because of the tide times! It was crazy! My alarm went off at 04:00 and I managed to get up and out of the tent, into the freezing cold at 04:15. Noone else was up - I had the responsability of waking them up - so I shouted out at the top of my voice "Morning Campers"!! It was so funny!
We left camp at 05:30 and made a 30 minute trek accross the island to the beach. The beach was stunning, breathtaking actually. I dont think I have ever seen anything so beautiful in all of my life - you will see what I mean with the pictures.
Today we had a 2 and a half hour drive along the beach. It was a 75 mile (123km) from the bottom of the island to the top - Indian Heads.
Indian Heads is located at the tip of the island - a great place to view from the top of the cliff, to see sharks, whales and dolphins.
I had a drive coming back and it was tough. It was so hard to drive on the beach with the thick sand. The sand was about two feet in depth, so you can imagnine the truck was going all over the place, even with me driving!
We stopped off at the Maheno wreck. The Maheno, the most famous of the Fraser Island wrecks, was driven ashore just north of Happy Valley during a cyclone in 1935. Once a well-known trans-Tasman liner, the Maheno was bound for a Japanese wrecking yard when she met her stormy end. Today the hull lies slowly deteriorating in the harsh salt environment, about 10 kilometres north of Happy Valley.
We were supposed to visit another lake today, but didnt have time, so we made our way to the new campsite and set up tent - Central Station.
We arrived in plenty of time to set up the tents and cook dinner, spaghetti bolagnaise, in the light this time, other than last night! We all sat around the table and drank beer, had dinner and was in bed by about 11pm.
