Monday 8th September -
We had to be up at 05:00 this morning because we had our final meeting before our trip to Fraser Island. Our meeting began at 06:00 with bacon & sausage sandwiches and orange juice.
We were very lucky because six out of eight in our group were in the same room the night before so we all managed to get an early night.
The final meeting was for a couple of hours. We had to pack all of our food in eskys (cool boxes) and pack up the tents, plates, cups and cutlery. These were all metal, so I guess this was when I realised that this camping was for real!
I freaked out a little bit when I was handed the shovel to dig holes with - to take a crap! I couldnt believe it and started to ask myself what I was doing thinking that I could do this...
Jonny drove the truck first, out of the hostel car pack and to the barge. I was the one to look after the tickets and to navigate the whole journey. I picked up the tickets and we waited for the barge. We all agreed that it was time to open up the beers - at 08:30!
We got onto the barge and took the 35 minute trip over to Fraser Island.
Our first stop on Fraser Island was Lake McKenzie. It was absolutely beautiful. Lake McKenzie is a popular lake on Fraser Island, located inland, with white sand and blue water. We stopped here for an hour or so, swimming and sunbathing.
Next stop was our camp at Lake Boomanjin. This is where the fun began because Malin (a girl from Germany) and I had to put up my own tent! I was pretty impressed becaause we were the fist ones to put up the tent, and were the only girls in the group! Get in there!
I realised at this point that although we were in a fenced area, there was no toilet around, so we had to dig a hole behind the tree, just in case of emergencies! I refused point blank to take a crap in the woods, so I grabbed a sheet of tarpooling and wrapped it around the trees, as protection from prying eyes! There was even a branch hanging out for the toilet roll to sit on - perfect! Youll see in the pictures!
Dinner tonight was a BBQ - Jacob (from Yorkshire) and I were cooking tonight. What a great team! Everyone was happy. The beer was flowing and so was the food.
A couple of girls from another group, also on the same camp site, got a bit hysterical when it got dark, they thought that someone was watching the tents and that the dingo's (wild dogs) were going to attack them in the night - drama queens!
Its safe to say that the toilet was not used on this night, for anything more that a wee!
