Yesterday afternoon we visited the "Ciudad Mitad del Mundo" ....Middle of the World.
Her we were able to put one foot in the Southern Hemisphere and one foot in the Northern Hemisphere. Actually the exact line of the equator shifts 5 KM but this was their best estimation for the monument.
This morning we went to mass at "Iglesias de la Compania". It is said to be the most beautiful church in Ecuador and I would believe that to be true. There is gold leaf everywhere!! It was started in 1605 and took 160 years to complete. The alter alone took over 20 years to complete. Unfortunately no photos are allowed but I don't think you could capture the beauty. Of course the mass was in Spanish but what surprised us was the Lord's Prayer was sung to the melody if Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence".
The church was located in the heart of the Old City so when we exited we found the center bursting with excitement and people selling their crafts as well and local artists performing. It was fun to wander through the square.
