Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. We had a fabulous tour today taking us by Land Rovers to the Bluff Cove Lagoon to see the Gentoo and King penguin colony. There are approximately 1,000 pairs of the Gentoo penguins. The penguins are quite curious so would come very close to us. The weather was very cold and windy but we were prepared so enjoyed the tour.
What really made the tour great was the Sea Cabbage Cafe which was heated by a traditional peat stove and the most delicious home-made cookies cakes and scones. It was like being served by the "church basement ladies". The Diddle Dee Berry Jam was fabulous.
We wondered who could possibly want to live on this island but the people here are so wonderful and make you feel so welcome it was lots of fun. Our driver needed to show us what his Land Rover could really do out in the marsh and river beds. Only about 2000 people live on this island and the history of the battle of 1982 between Britain and Argentina was very interesting. The analogy was great....like two bald men fighting over a comb.
Sounds like we were fortunate to be tendered in as about a third of the time it's too windy and the port needs to be skipped.
