We began our 3 day tour of Tortuguero National Park. We started with an early morning 5 hour bus trip and then a 1 hour boat trip to the canals along the Caribean on the North East coast of Costa Rica. We saw crocodiles basking in the sun of the river banks. The small country of Cost Rica has 112 volcanoes and 5 are active. We were lucky to see Volcano Irazu spewing steam this morning. Tortuguero is a very remote area with a series of rivers and canals. It is a dense tropical rainforest. It is hot and humid here but we were lucky with a beautiful blue sky today. We really just had time to settle in and then took a boat ride into the village. There are no cars here so the only mode of transportation is boat or walking. We walked back along the beach to the resort. The Caribean beach is black sand results of volcanic eruption and not advised for swimming due to rip tides, crocodiles and sharks.
This is not the turtle nesting season but Giant Sea Turtles nest off the coast here. Thus the name of Tortuguero.
