After Phenom Penn, we caught a bus to Siem Reap, which is the home of Angkor Wat, one of the 7 man made wonders of the world. We spent 3 days going around the ancient ruins, which were amazing and so impressive. Each ruin was different, some were tombs, others were covered by trees, one was used in Tomb Raider and you really did feel like Lara croft or Indiana Jones in the boys case, exploring these ancient ruins. It was a fantastic way to end our 7 months. On our last day, we watched the sun rise over Angkor Wat and then later caught a boat to a floating village, where we watched it set, it was an incredible few days.
We were slightly concerned about the bus journey and boarder crossing into Thailand from Cambodia, as everyone we met had a horror story about it. We had learnt the road was in a terrible condition as a certain airline in Thailand pays the Cambodian government off to keep the road in poor condition. We had also been warned that gangs often stop the buses crossing and make you pay them to take you across the border. There were also concerns that Thai/Cambodian relations were a bit touchy at the moment due to an argument over a temple. Nether the less we boarded the bus with everything crossed. It was fine!! The road was bumpy and we did get a puncture, which was soon fixed on the side of the road, without us even having to get off the bus. I didnt even realise we had a puncture until I saw huge flames coming from the side of the bus, when they had stopped to fix it! The crossing was easy, we had to wait about 30 mins for our connecting bus, but that wasn't an issue. The Cambodian children entertained us with their witty ways of trying to get anything they could from you. There was a 3 year old Aussie boy on the bus with us, which the Cambodian children found amazing. The poor boy was poked and stroked, picked up and had stickers stuck to the whole time we sat waiting! In total the journey took us just over 12 hours and it would be fair say I slept for the majority of that! Back in Bangkok we have spent most of our time shopping, we spent 5 hours in one shopping mall yesterday, I don't know who was more shocked that the boys lasted that long, me or them!!So that's it, this is likely to be our last blog until were back in England!!
