New Years Eve had quickly approached and with no plan as such the self proclaimed "adventure capital world", Queenstown promised to be a good place to stop.
It was a nice drive between Wanaka and Queenstown, very little traffic and picturesque, it all changed however as we arrived into town. The place was unbelievably busy, like Asda car park on a Saturday, horrible! To make things worse we didn't have anywhere booked for the night. We spent an hour crawling through the traffic in the small town visiting all the campsites but our only option was to pitch on the Rugby field. It was full of both Kiwis and tourists, some looked very rough with fantastic Portaloo toilets, reminiscent of V festival, and the fee was twice what we've paid for a night anywhere in New Zealand, but it did look good fun and with our only option being to leave town we begrudgingly paid up and pitched.
We'd shopped before we left Wanaka and had decent amount of good food for the next few days as we wouldn't see a supermarket for a while. Therefore we had Muscles and Spaghetti Bolagnasie for for tea, enjoyed it very much!
We spent the majority of the new years evening with a bunch of guys from Oz, Italy, France, and the Basque country who were here for the trekking. When they headed off to a gig for the new year we went into town to watch a free gig being held at the waterside complete with fireworks at midnight.
The entertainment was really good fun and it was great to get involved with the town, naturally we enjoyed it even more as it was all totally free. We saw the new year in with fireworks and Pink Floyd, not a bad combination. Happy New Year!
