Today I took charge of a car, which I named Chuck.
Chuck and me dont get along all the time, she doesnt start for me all the time, she doesnt care for me riding her clutch. But me and Chuck will sort things out.
After picking Chuck up from Edinburgh airport, we hit the road. BTW, you dont need anymore than 3 days in Edinburgh, it gets a bit depressing after that, all dark greys and angry scottish women...
Soon, the Scotland I envisaged opened up to me, little villages, open fields, barren hills, old walls, wooded enclaves... it was beautiful.
The best thing about choosing a $1.99 map over a $10 a day GPS is that you get lost. Now in Australia that wouldnt be good, because Australia is huge, Scotland is tiny. And getting lost just means you see a lot more than what you hoped for, then you can find your way back in 15 minutes.
Some of the main roads on the map are 1.5 cars wide at most, and I think its great.
Some memorable towns I drove through today were Dollar, Muthill, Crieff, Cupar, and a bunch of others. It rings a bell Mum that Muthill, or Crieff stood out for you for their flowerpots???
Visited Stirling Castle, with supplied photographs, and then went on the Famous Grouse Experience near Crieff. Lovely area, and quite an in depth tour given the price, after some whiskey samples me and Chuck enjoyed the scenery even more.
From there I deliberately took the long way to get to St. Andrews. Seriously, if I took the main roads I would have been there in 45 minutes, and this is almost canvassing half the breadth of Scotland from Crieff to Coast.
I knew I didnt want to spend $200 (pounds) playing there 2moro as soon as I walked up to the first tee... Its all a big novelty, there are hundreds of people walking around and everyone who stepped up on the tee was getting plenty of photographs. Then soccer mum and her three kids ran up on the famous bridge on 18 and had theirs taken even though they were just tourists...
Maybe another trip, but not this one...
St Andrews SYHA is spot on, ensuite accomodation with complimentary Shortbreads and wifi!
Will be off air for a few days, next time you hear from me I will have attended the Inverness Highland Games!!
