At last it was time to board my flight, at 3:30am. It's a great thing to start a mammoth journey like this….tired out of your head.
I went and sat n the departure lounge and they boarded the flight at around 4:30am, the time it was supposed to take off, final TIA moment to see me off. I got on the plane and I don't even remember it taking off because as it lifted into the air, I totally relaxed and fell asleep, I was that glad to be leaving the bed situation this had become.
The flight seemed to pass in the blink of an eye and I was soon getting off the plane in Cairo. I felt my heart take a leap as I came off the gangway and step onto Egyptian soil and then I felt it sink again, realizing I would only be here for two hours. Terminal three in Cairo airport looked amazing, all brightly lit, with beautiful shops and fast food places. The African nightmare was over. I was starving, so I sat down at Burger King and ordered a Chicken Royale meal. While I was eating Frank Sinatra started playing over the loud speakers and I felt totally content with my lot, I know everything always happens for the best and at that point I felt that in a funny way God had rescued me.
At 10am it was time to board my flight to London, there seemed to be much less room on this plane, but it was quite new and actually had inflight entertainment, good food and wifi…go Egypt Air! I didn't manage to get much sleep on this flight either so it seemed to take forever, especially when the plane circled over London for half an hour before landing. We got to about 500m altitude before I could even see anything below us! When we finally dropped below the cloud cover, there it was…a snow covered London. I don't know what I hadn't expected to see snow, I guess I thought I wouldn't be that lucky.
We touched down and the doors opened and let a blast of freezing cold air into the plane. I was glad I packed all my warm clothes in my hand luggage and immediately put my coat on. I went through passport control, which for me was just an electronic gate and went and collected my bag. I made my way to the tube station and paid and astonishing twenty five pounds to get to Huntingdon. I boarded to tube will all my bags and waited the hour for it to cross to the other side of London to Kings Cross, where I boarded the train to Huntingdon.
At Kings Cross I tried desperately to find my gloves as my hands had almost stopped working, but I resigned myself to the fact that I had put them in my pack and nothing was going to make me open that. I sat on the train for an hour and a half, which thankfully was well heated. Due to the snow there were numerous disruptions to the service and I ended up arriving n Huntingdon in the pitch dark at 6pm, it was actually pitch dark when I left London an hour and a half earlier….weird.
I got to the station and got off the train, I walked over the tracks and waited for Uncle Terry to pick me up. I got to Aunty Wendy's house and gave her a big hug, so glad to see a familiar face after all this time.
