I was up at what felt like the crack of dawn this morning, to make the people a packed lunch that were going on activities today. I had decided to go horse riding with Guy, Yngvar and Cate. Yesterday I asked our guide Daster for an old, fat horse, as the last time I was on a horse at Saqqara it just bolted, don't wish to relive that experience in Ethiopia. He told the guy bringing us the horses in Ahramaic, "Blah, Blah, Blah, Fat, Blah, Blah, Blah", the word fat must be the same in both languages or there is no word in Ethiopian for fat. Amusing.
The horse riding guide showed up to take us and we walked down the hill to get our horses. Mines name was Bolu and he was neither old or fat, not too confidence inspiring. I managed to get on the horse without too much trouble and was a bit shaky at first, but I did really well. One of the handlers just handed me a bit of rope which was the reigns and off I went, didn't need anyone leading me around or anything!
We rode the horses further down the hill and out of the farming area, we took them across the road and down a rocky embankment. We got to a part that was too steep for the horses, so we got off and led them down it and then across this rickety wooden bridge and back up the other side. When we looked behind us, we could see an amazing waterfall gushing over the cliffs behind us.
Once we got over the rocky bit, we were right in the national park and we rode through herds of Nyala, which a huge gazelle like creatures and reedbuck. We rode past a family of warthogs and scared another rabbit like creature out of the undergrowth. We reached a nice wide open space and managed to let the horses loose for a bit, I got mine up to a canter. I don't usually go past power walking. We rode our horses towards the beautiful scenery in front of us, which was a beautiful green mountain, framed by brilliant blue sky. I talked to Bolu the entire time, he had a lovely temperament and didn't scare me once. He liked to walk with Guy and Yngvar's horses and I called them the three amigos.
We stopped on top of a hill to let the horses have a rest and admire the scenery before taking off on the long ride back to the lodge. On the way back my horse managed to get into a gallop, which I didn't particularly like, but I managed to handle it myself and get him back to a trot.
We got back just in time for lunch and just lounged around for the rest of the day. I stayed up a bit longer and had a few drinks with Guy, Yngvar, Nicole and Dave around the fire and listened to music on my laptop, as they hadn't turned the power off on us. I went to bed and slept really well.
