Day 103. Today we are exploring the beautiful green Barossa Valley and wine tasting. First a drive from Tanunda up Menglers Hill Road to the lookout for a scenic view of the whole Barossa Valley, one of Australia's premium wine growing areas, notably big reds. Descending the hill we visited one of the oldest wineries in the valley, Chateau Tanunda. Beautiful old buildings and gardens, we tasted a number of wines in their impressive tasting room amidst the stacked oak barrels. Then we visited a much smaller winery known for its reds, Basedow Wines where very friendly Maria explained the history of the winery, the old German Basedow family and presented their excellent wines. Next stop was Maggie Beer's Home Farm further up the valley where Raechel purchased olives, preserves and olive oil. The farm was originally a pheasant farm and still farms these birds. We then drove up to nearby Seppeltsfield to walk around the historic old winery buildings and gardens. The best was yet to come when we drove back across the valley on dirt roads to visit small family-owned Bethany Wines set on the hill in an old quarry. Here we tasted their whole range of white and red wines and then sat under a tree in the garden with a delicious cheese, meat and dried fruit platter, with a glass of fine chardonnay for lunch. The views out to the valley were splendid. A short drive over the hill to village of Angaston and back to Tanunda through the hilly back roads completed our very enjoyable day. Dinner tonight barbecued chicken and vegies. Beautiful warm, sunny day 20 degrees, drove about 80km. We now have some extra wines for our journey!
