Paul and Laura on Tour
Wednesday 2nd August - So we left a foggy and wet tongariro for Wellington. It was a fairly long drive on some incredibly straight roads for New Zealand! So straight infact that Laura decided she wanted to try driving Bertha! She got braver as we went through a few small towns and before long she'd driven for 2 hours and we were getting to near Wellington. As our campsite was before the city centre she decided that she'd drive all the way there! Now this would have been fine apart from the fact that it turns out Lower Hutt (where our campsite was) is to Wellington what say Stockport is to Manchester! And with many mini roundabouts! Not the ideal size for a 6metre long van! She did really well but seemed a little traumatised by the experience. I'm not so sure she'll volunteer again!
Thursday 3rd August - Ventured into Wellington in the camper, me driving this time! Went to the Te Papa museum, very impressive, is fairly new and massive with loads of hands on fun stuff! Think I may be turning into a white van man though, nothing in city centres is made for anything bigger than a car! Laura had to calm me down a few times! First time driving has ever been stressful here. Stopped in lower hutt on the way back at a shop called Cool Britannia which sold UK food stuffs! Yes they had Vimto!! After nearly being so excited I wet myself, I was almost reduced to tears when I found out it was the sugar free version! Gutted, anyone who has seen my disgust for this imposter of a product will understand my heartache! (Jac, you're right it obviously is just foreign vimto!) Laura consolled me with Heinz treacle sponge and birds custard! Booked our ferry for the friday night to south Island, see if we can escape the weather!
Friday 4th August - Back into Wellington to try out the cable car! There's no flat land in wellington so they built up the hills around. To help people get up and down they put in a train up the side of the hill (see journal pic) Was good fun and you got to see some great views of the city. At the top are the observatory and the botanical gardens. The gardens have lots of sculptures in, including one where you can be a human sun dial! Laura did an admiral job considering the lack of sun!! Our ferry was at about 5 so we drove out of the city and to the terminal. The ferries they use are pretty massive and they even put trains on there! It was dark by the time we left but thankfully the water was fairly calm so not too much travel sickness from miss Jones! (for those of you that don't know, she doesn't like boats!!) Fortunately there's a campsite just as you get off the ferry so we stopped up there for our first night on the South Island.
