Paul and Laura on Tour
Thursday 10th August - We actually had a lazy morning as we don't have to move the camper by 10am which is the usual (we're always later and we haven't got in trouble yet!). Got picked up at around lunch time for our treck up the glacier. Kitted out with ice talons for our boots and everything we headed up there, with action man Paul(not me) as our guide! He had a massive ice pick/axe thing over his back and wasn't to be messed with!
It ended up being a really cool, no pun intended, trip. Seriously hard work as you're climbing steps cut into the ice that's more like a wall of ice, it's so steep! The ice at the front was really grubby, as not only does the glacier kind of spit out rocks it picks up along the way but there had been some avalanches recently which made it worse. Some of the crevices and cracks you went passed were seriously scary, like over 50m deep! but it was really exciting too. The views were spectacular at the top and we even got a rainbow over us! What we didn't realise was going back down is even harder work! Laura was really scared and I was putting on a brave face trying to help her down! But we made it safely and were both really glad we did it despite aching legs. I mean how often do you get the chance to get on a glacier?!
Well maybe the fox glacier down the road if you could actually get a campervan down the road to see it! According to the signs you couldn't and I wasn't going to argue this time!
