Paul and Laura on Tour
Sunday 13th August - Got up late after the late arrival in Queenstown at the smallest campsite ever! It's really central but it means land is at a premium, fitting as many campers in as small a space as possible.
Went to book some cool stuff as extreme activities are what queenstown is all about! We booked onto the Shotover Jet that afternoon, a mental jetboat ride that goes down the shot over river through canyons etc, and laura tried yet again for her skydive, booking on for the next morning.
We had a few hours to kill until the jetboat so went up the big cablecar they have which gives you amazing views over the city and of the mountains around. It takes 8minutes to get to the top and by the time we were up there it was snowing! First snow that's actually fallen on us while we've been here despite the mountains all being covered in it.
It had stopped when we got down and we headed out on a coach to the shotover river. When we got there...suprise, suprise it was raining! Which means they don't go out as the drivers apparently find it hard to see going 80km in the rain...whimps! We hung around a little while but when it was obvious it wasn't stopping we headed back. Made tea in the kitchen in the campsite and watched a really old Top Gear with a lad from beverly, an aussie bloke and a few beers...random! Didn't stay up late though as laura had an early start for her skydive!
Monday 14th August - Woke up about half 7....lots of cloud! Laura was supposed to be jumping at half 8 but it was put back until 2pm as the weather was supposed to get better later. Can I just say that I'm wasn't doing the skydive due to being a chicken, it's due to the 15.5stone weight limit which sadly I'm not under! Especially after only eating food prepared in a campervan or campsite kitchen.
Anyway with a morning free we went to try our luck with the Shotover jet again! And it wasn't raining!! Was really good fun. The boats only need about 10cm of water to run in so they go as close as possible to the edge as fast as possible past rocks and through canyons, throwing in 360 degree spins when the driver fancies it! Hopefully should have some action shots online by now! Grabbed some lunch and headed back into town to see if laura's jump was on and it was!!! I think this came as a shock to Laura as she wasn't expecting it! After not very long we were on the coach out to the airfield with the weather getting more and more sunny. We got to see a few people land before laura got called up to get her gear on get ready. Strangely Reese from Hollyoaks was also there doing a jump, incredibly random! I told laura to write this journal as she was the one that did it but she's sorting out the pics but from what I can tell she loved it!! The freefall from the plane at 9000ft was amazing and the views when the parachute was opened above the clouds was awesome. I think the wind had got up a little by the time she jumped though so I think the decent with the parachute open involved a lot of twists, turns and spirals which made her feel a little ill but she managed just fine! To prove how windy it was when the empty plane came into land it took it 2 attempts to manage it due to the wind!
So after the 3rd time she eventually did it! She also got a camerman to jump with her so the pictures are really cool! We grabbed tea from this awesome burger bar(Fergburger) that does these massive gourmet burgers while we waiting for the photo's to be developed. Yes I know I'm using the word awesome a lot, it's used all the time in Queenstown especially. Not as much as 'good as gold' which everyone everywhere uses all the time, including me now!! So be warned for when I'm home!
So with pictures in hand we left Queenstown late for Te Anua and the Milford Sound.
